• Proposed regulations developed by the Joint Boards of Nursing and Medicine (with input from the aforementioned committees) were published and a public hearing was conducted in January 1992.
• The regulations for Prescriptive Authority for NP’s were adopted by the BON on 5/18/92
• The BOM reviewed the regulations on 5/28/92. Amongst some of the Board members, there were still concerns and questions regarding NP practice and prescriptive authority. With the Executive Director of the BON and other BON attending an out-of-town meeting, Diane Hanna was asked to attend the BOM meeting and address their concerns. The BOM then approved the regulations with the addition of the statement “The supervising physician retains authority to restrict certain drugs within these approved categories” and another statement that requires the NP to disclose to the patient that he or she is a licensed nurse practitioner.(The phone request for Diane to testify before the BOM came less than two hours before “show time”. At home on a day off with her two year old, it was time to quickly change into a “power suit” and arrange for emergency child care . . . the MCV Child Care Center came to the rescue once again!)
• The Board of Nursing adopted the regulations as amended by the Board of Medicine on June 8, 1992. The regulations became effective on August 15, 1992.
