During the 2021 Virginia General Assembly, HB 1737 passed and reduced from five to two the number of years of full-time clinical experience a nurse practitioner must have to be eligible to practice without a written or electronic practice agreement. This legislation has a “sunset” clause and will expire in June 2022.

All NPs with two years of full-time practice experience are still eligible to apply for autonomous practice through June 30 and will retain this licensure. Starting July 1, NPs will return to the five-year experience requirement to apply.
